Module Syllabus Overview
This module covers the basic concepts of criminal law. You will learn about the different elements of criminal liability, difference between intention and negligence, how age and mental illness affects a person's culpability as well as how to analyse a situation to determine the criminal elements and concepts that are applicable.
This module has a multiple choice (MCQ) exam as well as two assessments. The two assessments combined have a marking weight of 20% and the exam carries 80% of the marks.
This module is at the NQF 5 level and is worth 12 credits.

- History of South African criminal law
- Principle of legality
- The four elements of criminal liability
- Difference between intention and negligence
- How does the Constitution affect criminal law
- The importance of causation
- How mistake can affect intention
- Reasonable person concept
- Defences against criminal liability
