The main applications period for all undergraduate qualifications is usually around October. This should be the time where you apply for your qualification as all qualifications are open at this point.

Although Unisa does not have 'late applications' per se, they will usually open up applications again in either December or January. This application period is not for all qualifications, but for some limited ones (e.g., generally law is not available during this application period). So depending on the qualification you are looking for, you may be able to apply now.

The next applications period is in April/May, although here again, this is for limited qualifications only.

The application fee is R150 (as at 2026). This is a once off fee.

No, you do not need to pay an application fee again if you have already done so previously. The application fee is a once off fee to create your student number/account and thereafter any future applications are free.

The first registration period is in January. During this registration period you can either register modules for only semester 1, or you may register modules for both semester 1 and semester 2. If you only registered modules for semester 1 in January, you can register modules for semester 2 in July.

You can register a maximum of 10 modules per year (maximum of 5 modules for semester 1 and a maximum of 5 modules for semester 2). You cannot exceed 5 modules per semester.

The only time you can exceed the 10 module cap per year is if it is your final year of study. In this case you are allowed to add two additional modules to your final semester (i.e., you can take up to 7 modules in your final semester of study).

If you are a self-funded student, it would be recommended to register semester by semester to make it easier to budget! If you are NSFAS funded it is recommended to register for all 10 modules in January to avoid any NSFAS funding hiccups.

TIP for self-funded students: Payment for any modules registered in first semester are usually due by the end of March. This is regardless of whether you have registered modules for first or second semester. Any modules registered in first semester have to be paid by March. As such, it would be recommended to register modules just for semester 1, and then in semester 2 register the next batch of modules. Semester 2 fees are usually due by the middle of August. Registering the semesters independently will help with budgeting.

If you are a returning student who needs to register modules for the second semester, or you need to edit your registration, you can do this via myAdmin.

• Log into your myAdmin portal
• Click the Student Admin tab
• Select the Register Additional Modules (edit registration) option
• From there, follow the prompts as they come up

IMPORTANT! You can only claim your myLife email account AFTER your registration has been confirmed.

You only claim your myLife email account once, when you are a new student. Once claimed, the email account is yours for life!

To claim your myLife email account, visit Unisa's website and click on the link at the top that says 'myUnisa'. On the myUnisa page click the link at the top that says 'claim UNISA Login' and follow the steps from there. Direct link: myUnisa Portal

Once you have claimed your myLife email account, it can take a number of days before the account is activated. It is not uncommon to have to wait up to about 4 days for the account to be activated. Don't panic or stress if you can't access your email account, simply give it more time.

There is nothing you need to do but wait for NSFAS to pay your fees.

Note that NSFAS no longer covers the cost of supplementary exam fees. These must be paid by the student themselves.

You can pay fees either via EFT (online banking), ATM or by using the card facility on myAdmin. Fees paid online using the card facility on myAdmin reflect immediately. Fees paid by ATM/EFT may take a couple days to reflect and be credited to your account.

If paying via EFT/ATM, you can find UNISA's banking details on their website. Always make sure you get the banking details directly from the UNISA website and not from anyone else!

Majority of law modules are semester modules, meaning you study them for one semester and then write an exam for that module (there are two semesters per year). Exams for first semester are written in May/June, and exams for second semester are written in October/November.

Supplementary exams are automatically granted to students who qualify for them. You will know that you have qualified for a supplementary exam because it will appear on your exam results. You do not apply for a supplementary exam. Supplementary exams for most law modules are written in the next exam period (May/June and October/November). Note that the supplementary exam is not a special exam. You will write the same exam as every other student for that module.

Assignments can be found on myModules. You will also submit your assignments here as well. Some assignments are written and some are multiple choice (MCQ).

Written assignments: You will find the question paper on myModules. You will then use your preferred word processor (e.g., Microsoft Word, Libre Office, etc.) and type out your assignment. You will then convert the assignment to PDF and submit it back onto myModules (same place you got the assignment from).

MCQ Assignments: These are done online on myModules. Consists of multiple choice questions (usually have 4 answers to choose from). It will use Moodle proctoring.

There are two main proctoring tools used by Unisa for your law studies. These proctoring tools are to ensure that there is no cheating and that everything abides by UNISA's exam/assignment policy.

Moodle Proctoring: This form of proctoring uses your device's camera. It ensures that you are the person doing the assessment/exam.

Invigilator App: This is an app you install on your phone. It records audio and periodically asks you to take selfies, photos of your ID/student card as well as your answer script. You can download this app from your app store. Bear in mind that the Invigilator App must be used on a separate device to the device that you are writing your exam on.

There are three main exam types; MCQ, written and portfolio.

MCQ Exam (multiple choice exam): This exam usually consists of 50 questions with each question normally having a choice of 4 possible answers. This type of exam normally uses Moodle proctoring.

Written Exam: This type of exam requires you to write your answers to the exam questions within a specific time frame. This type of exam normally uses the Invigilator App for proctoring.

Portfolio Exam: This type of exam is similar to a written exam, except that you are usually given a number of days to write the portfolio (usually between 7 and 10 days).

myModules: This is where you will find the study material for your modules, as well as assignments and announcements related to your studies.
